pl. roches mou·ton·nées (rôsh′ mo͞ot′n-ā′, -āz′, mo͞o′tô-nā′) An elongate mound of bedrock worn smooth and rounded by glacial abrasion. [French : roche, rock + moutonné, fleecy.] American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Fifth Edition. Rôche moutonnées form as a glacier flows over bedrock. Sediments entrained in flowing glacial ice abrade and polish the bedrock on the stoss side (facing towards the moving glacier) and pluck rocks off the lee side (facing away from the moving glacier).
This might be the reason why roches moutonnees in one particular region are of much the same elevation. Large and flat foresides of roches moutonnees often follow the "Bankung" of bedrock

Roche Moutonnée An elongated, rounded, asymmetrical, bedrock knob produced by glacier erosion. It has a gentle slope on its up-glacier side and a steep- to vertical-face on the down-glacier side. roche moutonnée(glaciated rock knob, stoss-and-lee topography) A mound-like land-form of glacial erosion, consisting of a smoothed, streamlined, up-glacier surface and a broken, shattered, lee flank, which probably results from a combination of abrasion, frost-shattering, and the plucking out of blocks by the glacier, although crushing has been suggested as a contributory mechanism. Roche means “rock.”Moutonnée is an antiquated word.
