These methods make it possible to do three-dimensional analysis of the differential effects of horizontal and vertical semicircular canal function and their individual disorders of the torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex. 2020-08-11 The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a reflex, where activation of the vestibular system causes eye motion. This reflex functions to stabilize images on the retinas (in yoked vision) during head motion by producing eye motions in the instructions opposite to head movement, hence maintaining the image on the center of the visual field (s).

Vestibulo ocular reflex

The reflex acts to stabilize images on the retinas of the eye during head movement, holding gaze is held steadily on a location, by producing eye movements in the direction opposite to head movement. The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) ensures best vision during head motion by moving the eyes contrary to the head to stabilize the line of sight in space. The VOR has three main components: the peripheral sensory apparatus (a set of motion sensors: the semicircular canals, SCCs, and the otolith organs), a central processing mechanism, and the motor output (the eye muscles). The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is a gaze stabilizing reflex: the sensory signals encoding head movements are transformed into motor commands that generate compensatory eye movements in the opposite direction of the head movement, thus ensuring stable vision. Disorders of the vestibulo-ocular reflex can be classified according to the three major planes of action, yaw plane, pitch plane, and roll plane, which equate with horizontal nystagmus, upbeat or downbeat nystagmus, and torsional nystagmus, respectively.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) ensures best vision during head motion by moving the eyes contrary to the head to stabilize the line of sight in space.

The vestibulo-ocular reflex has five components: a receptor that receives the stimulus, an afferent pathway, a central nervous system relay, an efferent pathway, and an effector that responds with a reaction. So, let’s use an example - let’s say that you turn your … Unlike the vestibulo-ocular reflex, the optokinetic reflex does not require the sensing of balance changes… only visual changes. So if you don’t see anything, like in the dark or if your eyes are closed, then you don’t have optokinetic nystagmus.
